Background information on use in cosmetics
Propolis (INCI: as word element PROPOLIS) or also referred to as bee glue, is produced by honey bees and consists of different tree resins, pollens and secretions. The natural substance has a resin-like consistency and an aromatic odour. The bees use the sticky substance as building material to close, for instance, openings in the beehive. Moreover, the resin ensures that the beehive remains germ-free. Propolis contains a large number of different ingredients, including vitamins, oils and flavonoids. It acts against dry, stressed or injured skin. Because of the many valuable ingredients and its skin-protecting and moisturising properties, propolis is frequently used in creams and lip care products. Allergic persons should, however, be careful: like other natural substances, propolis can trigger contact allergies.
Further information
For the clarification of a suspicion of a contact allergy this substance can be routinely tested in the epicutaneous test at the dermatologist.
