Background information on use in cosmetics
Bamboo has many different uses in cosmetics because of a series of active ingredients. For cosmetic products mainly the leaves of the bamboo are used from which not only fibres but also extracts are obtained for skin and haircare. In skincare the flavonoids in the bamboo extracts are particularly appreciated because they are known for their antioxidative properties. They act against skin ageing and promote at the same time the capacity of the skin to store moisture. In haircare products, the mineral substances in bamboo provide for more volume and impart the hair more tonicity. The high share of silicone, moreover, supports healthy hair growth. Silicone or silicic acid is, moreover, also a main component of bamboo powder. The latter is used in deodorants as well as foot and body powder and acts as a natural absorber, eg to absorb sweat. Bamboo scents are used both in perfume and in room and sauna scents because of their grassy note. They have a constructive and stabilising effect.
