Background information on use in cosmetics
Activated carbon (INCI: CHARCOAL POWDER) consists primarily of very finely ground carbon. Because of its fine-grained and porous characteristics, activated carbon can deploy a very large surface like a sponge and bind well other substances to it. Activated carbon is, more particularly, known for its use in filtering processes such as in water treatment. In cosmetic products the substance is preferentially used because of its adsorbing properties. In granulated form activated carbon is, more particularly, used in creams, face masks, peelings and in the production of soap. Because of its adsorbing characteristics, activated carbon is able to bind soil, bacteria and sebum deposits, so that intense cleansing can be achieved. In toothpaste, activated carbon is used in the form of microparticles and can contribute to the reduction of discoloration on the tooth surface.
