Background information on use in cosmetics
Aluminium stearates are fatty acid salts (so-called metal soaps). With oils and liquid paraffin they form gels which can serve as a cream basis. Oleo gelling agents such as aluminium stearate are, therefore, used as thickening agents in liquid hydrophobic (water-repellent) phases. They are a basic ingredient in oleogels on the basis of hydrocarbons, glycerides, polysiloxanes (silicones) or wax esters. Moreover, they are used as swelling and thickening agents for cosmetic products and are applied, for instance, also for the production of astringent powders and creams (eg anti-perspirants).
