Hair bleaching / decolorising products
Description
Products for (permanent) hair bleaching consist of two or three components which are mixed prior to application. One essential component is an alkaline preparation (in most cases a cream or gel formulation), because the pH is important for the efficacy. The second component is an emulsion which contains the oxidant (mostly hydrogen peroxide). For strong bleach products, a third component typically containing peroxodisulfate as an active substance (booster or enhancer) is added. Bleach enhancers (eg potassium, sodium or ammonium peroxodisulfate) and oxidants degrade the physiological hair pigments (melanins). Depending on the desired potency, 3 to 12% of hydrogen peroxide is used. Other components of bleaching products are stabilisers and alkalising agents (eg ammonia, sodium carbonate). Surfactants serve for an even distribution of the bleaching mass and eg CELLULOSE (carboxymethyl cellulose) for the thickening of the products. Substances for protection of hair keratin include, for instance, LANOLIN, LECITHIN or stearin. Bleaching products are marketed in the form of aqueous solutions, lotions, lightening shampoos, creams, powders and pastes.
