Essential oils
Description
Essential oils are volatile, intensely smelling mixtures of substances of oily consistency which are poorly soluble in water. As a rule, they are recovered from plant starting materials by steam distillation, but they can also be recovered by synthesis, extraction or squeezing. Pure plant materials like menthol, cineol, vanillin or thymol are likewise occasionally referred to as essential oils. In medicine, they are used for the treatment of many different ailments depending on the oil such as muscular or joint pains, infectious diseases, colds and gastro-intestinal complaints. In cosmetics, essential oils are mainly used for perfuming.
