Self-tanning ingredients
Description
Self-tanning ingredients (also referred to as self-tanners or skin tanning agents) are substances which provide the skin with a brown colouring without UV irradiation. The stratum corneum is stained superficially. As soon as the horny cells are scaling off, the tan is paling. In contrast to natural melanin (skin tan), this tanning does not protect against UV radiation. It is distinguished between ingredients which enter into a physical bonding with the skin surfaces (eg juglone) and substances which react chemically with the amino acids and peptides of the skin (eg dihydroxyacetone and erythrulose).
