Ingredients for dental care / caries prevention
Description
With a view to caries prevention, low amounts of fluorides are generally added to toothpastes. Caries prevention is based on the transformation of the less resistant hydroxylapatite of the tooth enamel to the harder fluorapatite. As a fluoridation agent for toothpastes, sodium or ammonium salts of the fluorophosphoric acid (fluorophosphates) or of hydrogen fluoride (fluorides) are used. Their concentration in cosmetic products is restricted by the EU Cosmetic Products Regulation to 0.15 % (total fluoride content). Plaque is removed by the mechanical effect of tooth brushing.
