Substancegroup
Hydroxyacids / Hydroxycarbonic acids
Description
Hydroxyacids are carbonic acids in which one or more hydrogen atoms of the alkyl group are replaced by hydroxyl groups (-OH). Depending on the position of the carboxyl group -COOH (=C1) in relation to the hydroxyl group, alpha, beta, gamma, omega hydroxyacids etc are distinguished. Lactic acid, for instance, is 2-hydroxypropionic acid and / or alpha-hydroxypropionic acid. Important hydroxyacids are, apart from lactic acid: glyceric acid, malic acid and citric acid. In cosmetics alpha-hydroxyacids are used frequently. They have a moisturising effect and stimulate the cell metabolism; moreover, they support the desquamation of the stratum corneum.
