Antioxidants
Description
An antioxidant is a low-molecular group or an enzyme which is supposed to protect the organism against reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hence against oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is considered as co-responsible for the ageing process and is associated with the development of a series of diseases. As technical aids, antioxidants also protect a large number of products from oxidative spoilage (e.g. cosmetics, foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals). In cosmetic products, natural or synthetic substances such as e.g. tocopherols (vitamin E), beta-carotene (provitamin A) or polyphenols are used.
